Course Description

Cargo Securement Safety is a 2 day comprehensive training is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed for safe and effective cargo securement.

Day 1

  • General Outline of Course and Expectations: Introduction to the training program, including goals, objectives, and the schedule for the upcoming days.
  • Guiding Principles of Public Safety: Understanding the fundamental principles that ensure public safety in cargo transportation.
  • Fundamentals of Cargo Securement: Basic concepts and techniques for securing cargo effectively to prevent accidents and damage.
  • Tie-Down Strength Requirement: Learning about the necessary strength requirements for tie-downs to ensure secure transport.
  • Cargo Specific Training: Detailed methods for securing different types of cargo, including:
    • Steel Coils
    • Paper Coils
    • Steel
    • Lumber
  • Weight Calculations: Techniques for calculating the weight of cargo to ensure proper securement and compliance with regulations.
  • Use of Tools for Securement: Instruction on various tools and materials used for cargo securement, including:
    • Racks
    • Blankets
    • Wood
    • Chains
    • Edge Protectors
  • Equipment Inspection: How to inspect and maintain securement equipment such as:
    • Strapping
    • Lever Binders
    • Load Energy Binders
    • Compression Binders
    • Ratchet Binders
  • Hands-On Instruction: Practical, hands-on training to apply what has been learned.
  • Questions and Answers: Opportunity to address any questions or clarifications needed.
  • Test: Assessment to evaluate understanding and retention of the day’s material.

Day 2

Review WSTDA Standard: Examination of the Material & Web Sling & Tie-Down Association (WSTDA) standards.

  • 49CFR Load Securement Requirements: Overview of North American cargo securement standards as outlined in 49CFR sections 393.100-393.106, including:
    • CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance)
    • Tie Down System
    • Aggregate Working Load Limit
  • Fundamentals of Cargo Securement: Continued focus on core securement principles.
  • Evans Specific Rules and Regulations Review: A representative from Evans will present company-specific rules and regulations.
  • View Cargo Accident: Analysis of a cargo accident to understand real-world implications of improper securement.
  • Securement Discussion: Practical discussion on securing various types of cargo, including:
    • Concrete Pipe
    • Heavy Machinery
    • Roll-Off Containers
    • Side-by-Side Loads
    • Sensitive or Fragile Machining Equipment
  • Safety Tips: Best practices for personal protection and safety during cargo securement, including:
    • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
    • Safe positioning and understanding failure modes
    • Choosing the correct tools
  • Hands-On Instruction: Further practical training on:
    • Trailers & Cribbing: Techniques for making and using cribbing, required materials, handling different types of trailers (Drop Trailers, Goose Neck Trailers, Bulk Head Trailers)
    • Front & Rear Cribbing Assembly
  • Document Review: Overview of essential documentation, including:
    • Shippers’ documents
    • Log Books
    • Incident Reports
    • Permit Issues
    • Escorts
    • Bill of Lading
  • Hands-On Instruction: Continued practical application of securement techniques.
