What is a Pre-Apprenticeship Program?
A pre-apprenticeship program is a preparatory training pathway designed to help individuals who are not yet ready (academically, technically, or via other prerequisites) for a full Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). The goals are:
- Prepare participants with foundational skills (academic, technical, soft skills) so that they meet the application or admission standards of a registered apprenticeship.
- Expose them to the workplace environment, industry norms, possibly via simulated or short work-experiences, so they better understand what the trade or occupation demands.
- Support participants in overcoming barriers (financial, logistical, educational) so they can succeed in transitioning into full apprenticeship.
Some standard features of quality pre-apprenticeship programs (per U.S. Dept of Labor guidance) include: approved/industry-aligned curriculum, hands-on or applied learning; partnerships with RAP sponsors; supportive services (childcare, transportation); direct or facilitated entry into apprenticeships.
