Course Description

The BLS Healthcare Provider Course provides participants the skills to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. In addition, participants will learn methods for avoiding hazards associated with bloodborne pathogens.

The course is appropriate for health care professionals, and first responders, as well as for laypeople who work or have contact with members of the public.

Upon completion of this class, students receive an American Heart Association BLS Provider Card that is valid for two years.

The BLS course includes the following topics:

  • Adult and pediatric CPR
  • Two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag-valve mask
  • Foreign-body airway obstruction (conscious and unconscious)
  • Automated external defibrillation (includes child AED update)
  • Special resuscitation situations
  • Other cardiopulmonary emergencies
  • Stroke and cardiac arrest
